How to Pass a Smog Check in California

You are here: Home / Smog News / How to Pass a Smog Check in California

June 23, 2026 //  by Kwic Smog Center

If your vehicle is due for a California smog inspection, you may be wondering whether it will pass. While no inspection station can guarantee a passing result, there are several steps drivers can take to improve their chances before visiting a smog check station.

Car Smog Check

Whether you need a STAR Smog Check, DMV registration inspection, or change of ownership smog certification, proper vehicle preparation can help avoid unnecessary delays and repairs.

Make Sure the Check Engine Light Is Off

One of the most common reasons vehicles fail a smog inspection is an illuminated Check Engine Light. Even if the vehicle appears to be running normally, an active emissions-related fault can cause an automatic failure.

If your Check Engine Light is on, have the issue diagnosed and repaired before scheduling a smog inspection.

Drive the Vehicle Before Testing

A warm engine typically performs better during emissions testing than a vehicle that has been sitting for several hours. Consider driving for at least 15 to 20 minutes before arriving for your inspection.

This helps bring the engine and emissions system up to normal operating temperature.

Keep Up With Regular Maintenance

Routine maintenance plays a major role in emissions performance. Replacing worn spark plugs, air filters, and other maintenance items can help your vehicle run more efficiently.

Following the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule may reduce the likelihood of emissions-related issues.

Check Tire Pressure

Proper tire inflation can improve overall vehicle performance and help ensure accurate testing conditions.

Use Quality Fuel

Using quality fuel and avoiding old or contaminated gasoline can help maintain proper engine operation.

Avoid Disconnecting the Battery

Disconnecting the battery may reset your vehicle’s emissions monitors. If these monitors have not completed their readiness checks, the vehicle may not be ready for testing.

If the battery has recently been disconnected, drive the vehicle long enough for the readiness monitors to complete their testing cycles.

What Happens If My Vehicle Fails?

A failed smog inspection does not necessarily mean your vehicle requires major repairs. In many cases, emissions-related issues can be diagnosed and corrected.

The inspection results will identify the areas that require attention before a retest.
